Hydration Tips For Camping

Planning a camping trip with friends or family? Hydration is an essential factor that should be considered when planning and executing challenges such as hiking or general travelling. Hydration makes the experience much more enjoyable through preventing illness, improving energy levels, and also eliminating the grumpiness that is experienced in the afternoon by many people, no one wants grumpy campers.

It is recommended that ½ a litre should be consumed for every hour of moderately strenuous activity within hot weather. Activites that this would be required for may be kayaking, chopping wood, or a casual bushwalk. However, for hiking activities that are slightly more intense, it’s recommended to drink 4-5 litres per day, as a general target. Also be sure to observe the colour of your urine to check hydration levels, light coloured urine indicates hydration, dark yellow indicates dehydration.

How to Stay Healthy Whilst on a Road Trip

Long road trips can take a toll on your body; stiff legs, aching muscles or even fatigue can affect your health. Below are some easy tips to follow when planning a road trip in order to stay healthy:

Plan Ahead

A good road trip should always follow a plan; it should outline toilet and food stops, petrol stops, and other things along the way. There are plenty of travel apps to help you plan for these things, and following a realistic plan will allow you to easily recover from the long hours of driving.

Hydration & Water

Although there is one downside to proper hydration – frequent toilet stops, but if you use the strategy above and plan your trip, you should take these toilet stops into account. As well as the basic health principles of hydration for your body, it helps to keep your eyes in good condition, ultimately allowing for a safer drive.

Fresh Food

It’s ok to have a burger or two every now and then, but through using a plan and making healthy choices, you should be fueling your body with fresh and whole foods. Too much takeaway food can negatively affect your mood and health, so instead, pack healthy snacks such as vegetables, fruit or muesli bars.

Physical Activity

Don’t stress, we don’t mean you have to go for a run every time you make a stop, but maybe just do some dynamic stretching whilst you’re not driving to help blood flow and energy increase. Even in your hotel room, you may be able to do some bodyweight exercises or swim in a pool to keep yourself active.
